    Research Interests

The research group focuses on interactions between hydrological processes and Carbon, Sulfur, iron and trace metal cycling and transformations in wetlands and lake. To this end we quantify elemental fluxes and identify and characterize biogeochemical and geochemical processes with chemical-analytical techniques. Remote sensing, mathematical Simulation models and statistical tools are applied in a supportive way to characterize system dynamics and to analyze the interaction of physical, chemical and biological processes under changing climate. The derived knowledge is used to elucidate the effect of environmental change on freshwater ecosystems on different spatial and temporal scales.

    Currently we investigate:

    1. Impact of drought, flooding and water transport on carbon, sulfur and iron transformations and carbon fluxes in freshwater ecosystem.
    2. Impact of groundwater inflow on biogeochemical processes and the surface water quality of eutrophic lakes in Eastern China, e.g. lake Tai and lake Chao.
    3. Regional peatlands development, and paleo-reconstructions of climate change from peatlands.
    4. Mapping GHG emission using remote sensing and in-situ observation to predict past and future peatlands carbon dynamics.
    5. Carbon sequestration in paddy soil with application of biochar.
    6. Application of spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques characterizing chemical speciation of elements in DOM and redox properties of DOM, mechanisms and rate of reactions which related to aquatic environments.

Peatland Carbon Cycle Responses to Hydrological Change and Redox Gradient and Its Implication for Aquatic Ecosystem

    broken image

    Environmental context

The extent to which organic matter decomposition generates carbon dioxide (CO2) or methane (CH4) in anaerobic ecosystems is determined by the presence or absence of alternative electron acceptors. Evaluating CO2 and CH4 production in anaerobic incubation of peat, we found (i) support for an internal cycling of sulfur, (ii) a predominance of organic matter as an electron acceptor over considered inorganic electron acceptors, and (iii) changes in organic sulfur speciation, suggesting a contribution of organic sulfur species to electron-accepting capacities.
